Thanks for taking the time, Vandes. What inspired you to pursue a career in music, and how has growing up in Chicago influenced your sound?
As a child, my mother worked on Sundays, which led to my grandmother babysitting me. Growing up, my grandfather was a pastor, and I spent a considerable amount of time in church. It was there that I was inspired by the incredible drummer, Maurice McDonald. I would often imitate his style and recreate some of his drumming techniques. This sparked my interest in music, and eventually, I was able to take piano and drum lessons, allowing me to develop my sound and style further in various ways beyond just drumming. Being raised in Chicago also had a significant impact on my musical style. Chicago has produced numerous talented artists, from Kanye West to Ramsey Lewis, providing me with the motivation to pursue a career in music and make a name for myself.
Your new album, “Rockstar Trap Music II,” has been highly anticipated. Can you tell us a bit about the creative process behind it and what sets it apart from your previous work?
This album was a very intentional and personal project for me. I put a lot of effort into it as I usually do, but didn’t feel like they had to conform to any music industry standards or expectations. Working with artists like Juicy J, MLE, and Jadakiss on the album was a great experience for me, and based on the feedback I’ve received, I feel that it has truly amplified expectations for my future releases. Above all, I enjoy keeping my listeners guessing with each new project I put out. to convey through your music, and how do you want listeners to feel when they listen to your album? My music is intended to resonate with a diverse audience, encompassing both pretty ladies and young gentlemen driven to succeed, as well as those who are going through difficult times and feel a sense of sadness. I also aim to connect with older generations, like grandmothers, aunts, and uncles. I believe there is something for everyone in my catalog, and I strive to create music that is both universal and authentic to my creative vision. I want listeners to feel a range of emotions when they listen to my album, from inspiration and motivation to comfort and a sense of relatability. Whether through catchy hooks, thought-provoking lyrics, or captivating melodies, I hope that my music can leave a lasting impact and connect with individuals on a personal level.
Your music has been described as a fusion of traditional Hip Hop and contemporary Trap sounds. How do you balance these two genres, and what drives you to push the boundaries of the genre?
I’ll forever acknowledge the inspiration I draw from the original Hip Hop culture, but I also feel a strong connection to Trap music in my soul. To strike a balance between traditional Hip Hop and contemporary Trap sounds, I always emphasize the importance of being open to trying new things that sound good to me. Often these things only sound good to me because the idea is in my head. The gift comes by way of giving. Many of my studio creations start as crazy ideas or snippets that are transformed into something majestic. Trusting my instincts and deeply understanding the discographies, and power players of both genres plays a crucial role in the balance of the two and the creative process.
You have collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry on this album. Can you tell us about your experience working with these artists and how they have influenced your music?
Working with artists like Jadakiss and Juicy J on “Rockstar Trap Music II” was an incredible experience for me. Collaborating with such renowned and talented artists has had an impact on my music. Jadakiss, being an iconic figure in the Hip Hop industry, brought a wealth of experience and lyrical prowess to the table. His verses and contributions added a layer of depth and authenticity to the songs. His presence and style pushed me to elevate my own lyricism and storytelling. Juicy J, known for his success in both the Hip Hop and Trap music scenes, brought his unmatched energy and charisma. His unique flow and delivery helped to infuse the tracks with a contagious energy that resonates with listeners. Collaborative work with Juicy J allowed me to explore the boundaries of Trap music and enhance my understanding of its nuances.Overall, working with these artists has not only made the album more diverse and exciting but has also influenced my own artistry.
