Andy Ray – “Birkirkara”: Cinematic Western Psych Meets Eastern Ambient Fusion

Due for Official Release on December 3rd, 2022

Via RED LIGHT STUDIO, the Greek avant-garde experimentalist Andy Ray is bringing high fidelity to his guitar tapes and jam mood overdubs from freelance musicians from around the world.

His upcoming release, “Birkirkara,” is an immersion in Eastern meets Western rhythm, inspired by early 60’s experimental psychedelic bands and Kikagaku Moyo, with an Eastern-Greek take on Tarantino’s vibes. The winding guitars, atmospheric percussive builds, harmonica fills, and sitar strings entwine into a mesmerising amalgam, unruly to constrictive traditional structuring.

The EP has been remastered as proof that nothing is impossible in the competitive and capitalist music industry, where budgets are barriers, but art and expression will always manifest and triumph.

The EP features German Perez Bottesi & Indiana Drones on bass, Epilef Terier & Anestis Psaltoy on drums, Chithrinie Nirupama on sitar, Hector Alexander on harmonica, and the vocalist Kanako Jones, in addition to Andy Ray on vocals and guitar.

Andy Ray said: “The naive playing of Syd Barrett really got me, and that flows through this EP. I chose an album without a metronome for an experimental shaky style. The background heat from the Only Lovers Left Alive soundtrack inspired this EP, along with a lot of influence from the past and modern psychedelic bands from the Californian new wave scene.”

Amelia Vandergast, the Executive Editor at A&R Factory said: “Andy Ray broke the monocultural mould with Birkirkara. The Eastern infusion alongside the bleeding cinematic Western tones created a feat of sonic beguile that few can authentically rival.”

About the artist
After growing up in a small fishing village in the South of Greece, Andy Ray (AKA Andreas Rozos), who had been experimenting with bass and guitar from a young age, moved to Athens to study radiology and discovered the underground music scenes. Armed with amateur recording equipment, he recorded his first experimental tapes with the creatives who shared his vision for un-stylised art.

Now in his 30s, working as a radiographer and in possession of hi-fi recording equipment, Andy Ray is remaking and remastering his previous recordings via RED LIGHT STUDIO. Following the release of Birkirkara on December 3rd, Andy Ray will release his live jam recordings, Cunts & Tapes Sessions Live, on December 22nd.
