George Pham is an independent musical artist who creates and produces lofi beats, a chill genre of music, a subgenre of electronic music that shares qualities with downtempo music. We had an exclusive opportunity to talk with Pham and ask him about his profession.
You are from New Zealand. How has being from NZ influenced you and your music? Tell us about your upbringing.
“To be honest, New Zealand alone hasn’t really influenced me on my music creation or goals (apart from the people around me of course) it was mainly just lo-fi itself and the many other artists that create and produce it. And to be honest; I don’t even know any other artists in the same genre as me from my home country. My upbringing also had nothing to do with music creation at all, I used to listen to alot of music when I was younger and I still do to this day.”
You define yourself as a “lofi beats” artist. What exactly is that, and how did you come to perform that style of music?
“My first memorable time of me listening to lofi was in Brisbane, Australia with my dad in a hotel. It was a hot day and I was by the pool with my speaker and decided to put on some ‘chill’ music’ I remember vaguely listening to alot of TomppaBeats, Listening to lofi for the first time was quite literally ‘music to my ears’ and I caught on super quickly this was also at a time where the genre was not popular at all and a few years later im sitting at home giving my own take on the unique genre.”
What gives you the motivation to keep creating music?
“My listeners and supporters give me the drive to keep creating and producing day and night. I create music not for myself but for the people around me and the people who listen to it. The most important step I take when producing music is inputting the ideas and reviews I receive to make it a more enjoyable listening experience. This is why I think it’s so important to listen to your supporters so you can grow a special connection with them that is unique.”
Tell us about “The First Step” single. How has its success raised the bar for your future releases?
“The First Step was marketed and hyped up very well as it was my first track with my first feature, The First Step was produced to perfection, and is still the personal favourite of any song I have released. I think it will definitely be hard to beat as my top streamed song.”
Speaking of, what music do you have coming out in the near future?
“I recently released my new EP titled ‘VISION’ that I have been working on for the past few months, as of now I am on break, but I have some ideas in mind I would love to capitalise on early next year. I can’t speak much on it now, But stay tuned.
What are your 5 year goals?
“In the next 5 years I really want to be able to travel more, work harder, and most importantly grow my online presence. I am willing to put all of my time and energy into working on myself and what I come off as online, I have many goals I would like to set and achieve in the coming future. My life is moving fast, and I have to keep up. Thanks!”
