About Cindy Alter
Born into a musical family, Cindy Alter picked up a guitar at age 10, wrote her first song by 15, and spent her teen years performing rock covers from bands like Led Zeppelin and Grand Funk. Influenced by James Taylor, Carole King, and Cat Stevens, she released her first single, “Schoolboy,” shortly after high school. Her life changed in 1977 when she joined the all-female band Clout, whose hit “Substitute” became a global sensation, contributing to nearly 14 million albums sold and leading to tours with The Police, Supertramp, and Dire Straits. After the band split, Cindy carved out her own creative path—fronting Cyndicate, forming the multicultural pop-rock group Zia, and later moving to Los Angeles, where she released two solo albums and became a fixture in the local songwriting scene.
In 2002, Cindy confronted a life-threatening leukemia diagnosis, emerging from treatment and a stem-cell transplant with renewed artistic purpose. She reunited with Clout for a successful South African tour, formed the acoustic country-rock duo Alter Irving, and continued producing heartfelt original work. In 2022, she finally made the move to Nashville, where she quickly became a vibrant part of the city’s songwriting community. Her 2024 EP Renegades and Vagabonds, recorded with top Nashville talent and produced by Dave Tough and Steve Creech, highlights her seasoned songwriting craft and enduring spirit.
